Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the California WCIRB’s recent release of its 2023 Geo Study, which examines regional differences in claim characteristics across California, complete with an interactive map that allows viewing of key measures across regions.
Key findings from this year’s edition included that after controlling for regional differences in wages and industry mix, indemnity claim frequency continued to be significantly higher in the Los Angeles Basin and significantly lower in the San Francisco Bay Area. The WCIRB also noted that the share of larger indemnity claims (incurred costs >$250,000) at fifth report level tends to be higher in regions that have lower indemnity frequency. Also of note was that the share of cumulative trauma (CT) claims as a percent of all claims decreased for almost all regions from policy year 2020 to 2021.
