Lakeland, FL – Summit recently announced the release of its updated COMPInsiders® reports, designed to provide valuable insight into claims and injury trends.
The industry-specific reports include claims data from 2017 through 2022 for Summit-managed insurers.
The reports examine the top five claims—and safety tips on how to help prevent injuries—in several different industries:
Construction
From 2017 through 2022, Summit received 138,700 workers’ compensation claims, and 20% of those claims were construction related. The most common injuries by body part were lower back strain and the finger being cut, punctured or scraped. Despite its high injury rate, construction can be a safe occupation when effective risk control practices and procedures are implemented on the jobsite.
Healthcare
Summit’s internal data shows that injuries in the health-care industry were 13 percent of the total claims reported from 2017 to 2022, ranking second for the number of claims following the construction industry. The most common body parts involved in these injuries were the lower back, finger, knee and shoulder, due to strain, same level slip, trip or fall and being cut, punctured or scraped by an object. Many of these injuries can be avoided with continual safety training and education.
Manufacturing
Numerous risks are associated with working on a manufacturing site. The most common injuries by body part were lower back (strain) and finger (cut, punctured or scraped and by being caught under or between an object). For the most part, injuries can be avoided by implementing effective risk control practices and procedures.
Hotels & Motels
Many types of lodging facilities make up the accommodation industry. Hotels and motels are the most common and tend to have the highest number of claims. Between 2017 and 2022, Summit received 3,611 claims for workplace injuries in hotels and motels. From 2017 to 2022, the most common injuries reported in hotel and motel workers’ comp claims were strain to the lower back, cut, puncture, scrape or rub to the finger and same level slip, trip or fall with multiple body parts involved.
Retail
