Austin, TX – Gov. Greg Abbott has appointed Gary Gibson of Houston and reappointed Kristi Koncaba of Friendswood and Ron Simmons of Lewisville to the Texas Mutual Insurance Company board of directors. Their board terms for Texas Mutual are set to expire on July 1, 2029. Simmons will continue to serve as chairman of the board.

Gibson joins the Texas Mutual board after the departure of John Swanson, who has served on the board for over 10 years.

Gibson is the chief financial officer of Star Furniture Company, a position he has held since 1994. He is a member of the MD Anderson Cancer Center Executive Committee, the executive committee of the Texas Business Leadership Council and the Park 10 Association Board of Directors. He is also a member and former chair of the Chapelwood United Methodist Church Board of Stewards. Gibson is a former chairman of the Texas Association of Business Board and former member of the Texas Retailers Association Executive Committee. Additionally, he is a former board member, finance committee member, and audit committee member for the University of Texas Medical Branch.
Gibson earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Texas A&M University and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting from Sam Houston State University.
Koncaba was appointed to Texas Mutual’s Board of Directors in 2018 serving as secretary and operations chair. She has over 20 years of experience in commercial banking, including being the co-founder and President of Texan Bank, National Association which sold in March 2022.
Koncaba serves on the boards of the Texas Bankers Association, Texas Bankers Foundation, Stewart Security Capital, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce and South Belt-Ellington Chamber of Commerce. She was a past chairperson for the Texas Bankers Foundation, Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Bay Area YMCA Advisory Board. She was a 2013 Change Magazine Women Creating Change honoree, a 2016 University of Houston–Clear Lake Early Achievement Award recipient, a 2017 Perry Family YMCA Volunteer of the Year, a 2019 Houston Business Journal Women Who Mean Business awardee and a University of Houston Cougar 100 honoree each year from 2018 to 2022.
Koncaba earned a Bachelor of Science in American Jurisprudence and a Master of Arts in Human Resources Management from the University of Houston – Clear Lake.
Simmons has served as chairman of the Texas Mutual board since 2019. He is the co-founder and chairman of the Retirement Advisors of America and a former state representative for Texas House District 65. He is a former board member of the American Legislative Exchange Council and has served on the Education Commission of the States. He is also the former vice chairman of the Autism Society of America.
Simmons earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business from Dallas Baptist University.
Texas Mutual’s board members represent a diverse mix of Texas industries and regions. The Governor, with the advice and consent of the Texas Senate, appoints five of the nine directors, including the chair. Policyholders elect the other four directors.
