Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features Liberty Mutual’s release of the 2023 edition of its Workplace Safety Index, which documents the top ten causes of the most serious workplace accidents (five or more days missed from work) and ranks them by total workers’ compensation costs, which include medical and lost-wage payments.
Key findings included that workplace injuries cost U.S. companies over $1 billion per week, with the “Overexertion Involving Outside Sources (Handling Objects)” and “Falls on Same Level” injury categories leading the way. This year’s report also drills down on common causes of injury and how they may be unique to specific industries, examining eight specific industry sectors, including Construction; Healthcare & Social Services; Leisure & Hospitality; Manufacturing; Professional Services; Retail; Transportation & Warehousing; and Wholesale.
