Work Comp College Webinar to Review 1972 “National Commission” Report

March 6, 2023 - WorkCompWire

Lakewood Ranch, FL – Work Comp College recently announced its first ever live class, which will be free to the public and recorded for its Advanced Training & Education Center.

An esteemed panel of experts will discuss and compare the workers’ compensation system with the 1972 Report issued by the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws.

On July 31,1972, the “National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws” submitted its report to President Nixon and Congress after a year of hearings and meetings. The 15-member Commission was appointed by President Richard Nixon as part of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The report concluded that a system of 50 different systems was appropriate for the U.S. and at the time of the report was “inadequate and inequitable.”

The Commission’s report contained recommendations for improvements to bring the state programs up to an acceptable level of benefits and recommended that the states be given an opportunity to remodel their laws before mandatory Federal standards were adopted. There were legislative changes in many states during the decade following the report’s release, but no federal legislation.

Fifty years later many of the recommendations have not been implemented by all fifty states, but the report continues to be a benchmark for a system that delivers on the promise of workers’ compensation for many. This discussion that includes multiple stakeholder perspectives will examine the report, its effect on the U.S. workers’ compensation system and its applicability for the future.

Panelists will include:

  • Jennifer Wolf
  • Abbie Hudgens
  • Hon. Timothy Conner
  • Alan Pierce
  • Dr. John Ruser

The webinar is scheduled for March 7, 2023 at 1:00PM Eastern.
