Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the National Safety Council’s release of a new report and playbook through its Work to Zero initiative that aims to equip organizations with the information and solutions they need to more effectively mitigate and address workplace violence.
The NSC noted that in 2020, the Bureau of Labor Statistics found nearly one in six occupational fatalities stemmed from violent incidents, with healthcare consistently ranking as the industry most impacted, with an average of nearly 13,000 non-fatal violent incidents occurring annually. Violence is also the most common cause of death for women in the workplace behind transportation incidents. In addition to calling for more legislative action, the report includes key steps to take, like designating a task force; conducting regular exercises/simulations; using technology; and working on workplace culture issues.
