July 21, 2022 - WorkCompWire

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features MEMIC’s announcement that its Safety Research Center is now accepting applications for a grant of up to $30,000 to engage in research that makes a positive impact on workforce safety and health.

The MEMIC Safety Research Center was created in 2021 to facilitate understanding and prevention of occupational injury and illness in partnership with MEMIC staff, policyholders, and academia. This is the second round of grants offered by the center and funding is available to researchers from higher education institutions in the United States and its territories. In 2021, the center made its first-ever award to a faculty team at Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s Department of Safety Sciences that is investigating ways to limit slips, trips, and falls in the workplace, which the researchers noted were the second most common cause of workplace injury in 2020, accounting for 18.2% of all workplace injuries and illnesses with an estimated direct cost of nearly $11 billion.
