CA Governor Newsom Appoints Meagan Subers as New CHSWC Commissioner

June 17, 2022 - WorkCompWire

Oakland, CA – The California Commission on Health and Safety and Workers’ Compensation (CHSWC) recently announced the appointment of Meagan Subers to the Commission by Governor Gavin Newsom. Subers is appointed as a labor representative to serve on the Commission through December 31, 2022.

Subers is a legislative advocate and owner of Capitol Connection, a small lobbying firm in Sacramento. Since 2010, she has represented a number of labor organizations and consumer groups including the California Professional Firefighters, which represents over 30,000 rank and file firefighters in the State of California. Subers has also engaged in and advocated for a number of health and safety protection measures including updating the personal protective equipment standards for firefighters and ensuring access to the workers’ compensation system for injured workers.

Previously, Subers was a communications specialist with Swanson Communications from 2008 to 2010. Subers is a member of the Institute of Governmental Advocates. This position does not require Senate confirmation and the compensation is $100 per diem. Subers is a Democrat.

A total of eight (8) Commissioners are appointed by the Governor and the Legislature. Labor Code 75 establishes that two of the employer members and that two of the labor members of the Commission shall be appointed by the Governor for a sub-total of four (4) members. The Senate Committee on Rules and the Speaker of the Assembly shall each appoint one employer and one labor representative for a sub-total of four (4) members. Additional information about CHSWC’s Commissioners is posted online.

CHSWC is charged with examining the health and safety and workers’ compensation systems in California and recommending administrative or legislative modifications to improve their operation. The commission was established to conduct a continuing examination of the workers’ compensation system and of the state’s activities to prevent industrial injuries and occupational illnesses and to examine those programs in other states.
