Sacramento, CA – For three weeks in April, State Fund employees walked. They walked during our lunch breaks and after hours. They walked in place during Zoom meetings and outside with kids and pets in tow. They walked and walked and walked with the purpose of raising funds for the American Cancer Society (ACS).
It all started on April 7, when State Fund CEO Vern Steiner led by example by walking an impressive 142,296 steps, or 81.42 miles in the 24-hour Fit2Be Cancer Free CEO Challenge, competing against CEOs from all over the nation for the highest number of steps. State Fund is proud to say he finished in first place, kicking off the three-week employee challenge in support of the American Cancer Society’s Fit2Be Cancer Free Step Challenge to raise money to fight cancer.
During the employee challenge, thousands of dedicated team members walked more than 100,000 miles to help fund transportation grants for cancer patients who struggle to get to their appointments. For every 20,000 miles, State Fund pledged to donate $20,000 to one of five ACS partner organizations.
“It is unthinkable that cancer patients may be deprived of treatment because they are unable to secure reliable transportation. We are honored to support the American Cancer Society through initiatives such as the Fit2Be Cancer Free Step Challenge and help cancer patients throughout California access the medical care they need.” Vern Steiner
The overall goal of funding five organizations across California was met on the last day of the challenge thanks to a last-minute push from Vern and our dedicated steppers. Speaking of steppers, one of our own – Chandra Mohan – walked a remarkable 2,049,282 steps during the challenge to become the number one stepper in the nation! How did State Fund finish overall? Out of 47 participating companies nationwide, State Fund placed second in total number of miles walked.
State Fund is proud to have participated in the ACS step challenge and play a part in making a difference in the lives of cancer patients throughout California.
