Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of the results of a new impairment in the workplace survey by the National Safety Council that found 90% of employers are concerned about mental health and chronic stress impacting fitness for duty – in addition to persistent concerns around legal and illicit substance misuse.
As a result of the findings, the NSC is shifting gears to call on employers to consider far more than substance misuse when addressing “workplace impairment,” and is urging that employers’ policies and procedures outline “workplace impairment” as anything that could impede one’s ability to function normally or safely as a result of a number of factors – from chemical substances, such as alcohol, opioids or cannabis, to physical factors like fatigue, as well as experiencing mental distress and social factors like stress. NSC also noted that more than half of employers surveyed said they know impairment is decreasing the safety of their workforce.
