Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new analysis from CWCI that found the monthly count of COVID-19 work injury claims reported to DWC leapt to a record 32,549 cases in December (with almost 10k more expected) bringing the total COVID-19 claims for accident year 2020 to 103,712, or more than 1-in-6 of workers’ comp claims for AY 2020.
CWCI also noted that the most recent data show that more than half (50.8%) of all workers’ comp claims in California in December were for COVID-19, up sharply from 29.3% in November, the previous record for the year. Even without adding claims yet to be filed, the huge increases in COVID-19 cases already recorded for November and December have driven overall workers’ comp claim volume for Q4 to 166,587, which is actually 3.2% more than the 161,478 claims recorded for Q4 of AY 2019.
