Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new study from WCRI that found despite substantial reductions in recent years, opioids continue to be widely dispensed to injured workers in several states, and examines factors that are associated with longer-term opioid use.
Key findings included that the strongest predictors of longer-term opioid prescribing are related to opioid prescribing early in a claim. Additional factors that increased likelihood of long-term opioids included receiving a higher number of days’ supply of opioids early after an injury, taking a higher total dose in the initial 90-day period; simultaneously receiving opioids and other central nervous system depressants; multiple opioid prescriptions, and more.
