Today’s issue of WorkCompRecapfeatures Coventry’s release of the fourth portion of its 2019 First Script Drug Trends Series Report, which examines “high impact” drug classes.
The report notes that while categories like topicals, compound kits, combo packs, and specialty medications have proportionately low utilization, they can be associated with exponentially significant costs. Key findings included that topical and specialty classes accounted for an increased percentage of total cost in 2019 data, and the number of injured workers using topical medications rose 7.5% to 13.4%. The report also noted that 4 of the top 5 specialty disease conditions had double-digit increases in cost per claim from 2018-2019.
