Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features Coventry’s release of the first portion of its 2019 First Script Drug Trends Series Report, which examines opioid trends.
The report notes that opioids continue to represent a decreasing proportion of overall scripts and costs, with favorable trends seen in markers like morphine equivalent dose (MED), duration of use, and access to guideline-supported measures including medication-assisted treatment and overdose rescue medication. Highlights included that the number of injured workers using opioids has continued to decline for 6 consecutive years, and opioid script utilization has fallen at least 10% each year for the last 5 years.
