July 27, 2020 - WorkCompWire

Baltimore, MD – Maryland Insurance Commissioner Kathleen A. Birrane has named Gregory M. Derwart as Chief of Staff for the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA).

Derwart has extensive experience in state government. From 2015 to 2019, he was Managing Director, Administration & Customer Experience, at the Maryland Department of Commerce. During his tenure, he led Governor Larry Hogan’s statewide customer service initiative, conducting research and implementing improvement plans across 40 state agencies, including training, recognition programs, performance metrics, and satisfaction surveys.

Derwart also served as Director, Division of Administration, for the Maryland Transportation Authority from 2005 to 2007.

“Greg is a seasoned administrator whose extensive experience in the private sector, combined with his in-depth understanding of Maryland government, will enable him to be a tremendous asset to the Maryland Insurance Administration,” said Commissioner Birrane. “He is deeply committed to public service and operational excellence and will further our core objectives of providing excellent customer service and protecting Maryland insurance consumers while effectively and fairly regulating our state’s thriving insurance industry.”

Immediately prior to joining the MIA, Derwart was Chief Operating Officer at Maller Wealth Advisors in Hunt Valley, Md. During his career, he also served as Chief Operating Officer at the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts and The Arc of Baltimore.

“It is indeed an honor to be returning to the Hogan Administration in this new capacity,” he said. “I sincerely look forward to working with Commissioner Birrane and the entire MIA team.”

Derwart holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree from the University of Baltimore.
