Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features Broadspire’s release of a new white paper that examines how the COVID-19 Coronavirus and similar occupational diseases are viewed in a workers’ compensation context.
The white paper includes background on the virus and explores its compensability, noting that the flu and other infectious diseases are not covered or accepted under workers’ comp, and many states specifically exclude diseases from coverage. However, there are exceptions for occupations where the exposure can be considered an occupational disease, and the paper examines the required tests and conditions. The paper also examines how employers are responding, the ensuing focus on safety, and caps off with some perspective on the overall workers’ comp impact.
