Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features AmTrust’s recent release of its Opioid Prescription Risk Report from an initiative with Optum’s WC & No Fault Division to improve outcomes and reduce opioids prescribed to injured workers, which decreased the number of prescriptions containing opioids by 13,000 compared to the prior year.
The report examines the effects of the opioid epidemic on the workers’ comp space and details the progress the partnership achieved in reducing claims with opioids and replacing them with safer, alternative treatments. Workers’ comp claims with prescriptions containing opioids dropped from 60% to 25% between Q4 2017 and Q4 2018. The average day supply of opioids held by patients also decreased 57.3% over the same time period as the average transactions per claimant containing opioids went down by 21.6%.
