Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of the first part of a new report from the California Workers’ Compensation Institute (CWCI) that found that NSAIDs have replaced opioids as the most common drug group prescribed to injured workers in the state.
Key findings included that efforts to curb inappropriate use of opioids are continuing to have an effect, as opioids fell to 18.0% of prescriptions filled in the first half of 2018, down from 20.2% in 2017, and 30.5% a decade ago. NSAIDs’ share of prescriptions has continued to grow after taking the top spot in 2016 and climbing to a record 31.7% of the drugs dispensed to injured workers in the first half of 2018. The top spot for payments, however, belongs to dermatologicals, which now account for 17.6% of total drug spend in the state.
