Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new Insights report from NCCI that examines “Mega” claims in workers’ compensation – extraordinary occurrences that exceed $10M and can also have a significant impact on the industry.
NCCI noted that surprisingly, the number of mega claims jumped in 2016, but whether it was a one-time blip, or a new trend, remains to be seen but will be key for the industry. For accidents occurring in 2016, ten claims of at least $10M were observed (more than for any of the previous 15 accident years). Leading causes (70%) include motor vehicle accidents or falls from elevation, and 95% involved injuries to the central nervous system or multiple body parts. Hospital inpatient and home health care accounted for more than half of the mega claim medical costs, with 67% of mega claims involving inpatient hospital stays of 3 months or more.
