Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new research brief from NCCI that examines a recent increase in the frequency and severity of workers’ compensation claims for motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and discusses potential contributing factors.
NCCI noted that continued advances in workplace safety have helped drive a long-term decline in workers’ comp claim frequency, which makes this rise in injuries and deaths troubling. Key findings included that despite the overall frequency decline in WC claims, the frequency of WC claims for MVAs increased from 2011-2016. Additionally, NCCI determined that an incredible 41% of fatal WC claims were the result of an MVA. NCCI also noted that while many factors contribute to MVAs, the rise coincides with the increasing popularity and use of smartphones.
