Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features ACOEM’s presentation of a new article in JOEM that examines the demographic trends that are leading to an aging workforce, and how emphasis on “productive aging” will be needed to keep US workers of all generations as healthy and productive as possible.
The article notes that by 2022, nearly two-thirds of Americans aged 65-74 are expected to still be working, compared to about 20% in 2002. As a result, NIOSH’s National Center for Productive Aging has developed a framework for productive aging of the workforce, consisting of four elements, which include a life-span perspective, reflecting lifelong biologic, psychological, and social factors; a comprehensive and integrated approach to worker health and safety; an emphasis on positive outcomes for both workers and organization; and a supportive work culture for multigenerational issues.
