Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features NCCI’s continuation of its three-part series called “On Opioids” that examines the growing issues related to opioid use in America. The series looks at three viewpoints on issues surrounding opioid use and workers compensation: those of doctors, insurers, and regulators.
For the second part of the series, NCCI interviewed several claims management professionals in the workers’ compensation industry, including insurance company representatives and a third party administrator (TPA). Claims professionals highlighted five key areas for successfully managing opioid use, including early identification of addiction risk, rigorous monitoring, a team approach to pain management, a favorable regulatory environment, and general healthcare literacy.
