Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features NCCI’s launch of a new three-part series called “On Opioids” that examines the growing issues related to opioid use in America. The series looks at three viewpoints on issues surrounding opioid use and workers compensation: those of doctors, insurers, and regulators.
For the first part of the series, NCCI interviewed physicians who reflected on the key factors that contributed to the national opioid epidemic, its impacts on the industry, alternative treatment options, and regulations to help deter misuse. Highlights included that physicians agreed that due to observance of guidelines, strict adherence to treatment plans, and regular drug testing of injured workers, the workers’ comp system is better off than the public at large in battling the opioid epidemic. Doctors also pointed out that addressing psychosocial issues and fully understanding the sources of pain from which the patient suffers are crucial to getting the injured worker on a path to recovery.
