Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the North Carolina Industrial Commission’s recent announcement of developments in the process to adopt rules for the workers’ comp system that help address the ongoing opioid crisis.
The Commission noted described the new rules for the utilization of opioids, related prescriptions, and pain management treatment as proactive measures aimed at curtailing opioid misuse and addiction in workers’ comp claims, and the proposed text includes features like a 5 day limit on first scripts for acute pain, limits on MED units per day, and restrictions on certain opioid preparations. A public hearing is scheduled for March 2, and the Commission is accepting written comments until March 19. If adopted and approved, the earliest effective date of the rules would be May 1.
