Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the North Carolina Industrial Commission’s announcement of the proposal of rules for the workers’ compensation system geared toward addressing the opioid crisis.
In February, the North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Opioid Task Force was formed to study and recommend solutions for the problems arising from the intersection of the opioid epidemic and related issues in workers’ compensation claims. Several months of research and stakeholder collaboration went into developing the proposed utilization rules, and the commission noted that it considered the recommendations of the Opioid Task Force and feedback received through preliminary public comment. The earliest effective date of the proposed rules, if adopted, is May 1, 2018, and the commission has posted the proposed rules on its site.
