Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new white paper from the Workers’ Comp Benchmarking Study Group that examines the finding from the 2017 Benchmarking study that 46% of claims leaders believe adjusters become experts at claims management within 4-6 years on the job.
The white paper explores what makes a claims expert, and how to become one, including strategies for achieving peak adjuster performance rooted in “deliberate practice,” a concept popularized by pop-psych author Malcom Gladwell with the “10,000 hour rule”. The authors found that the deliberate practice concept can both explain why many claims pros grow to peak performance, and why many do not, noting that rather than sheer volume, certain conditions and skill development methods must be present. Results from the Benchmarking Study were also found to confirm that claims organizations doing more to help adjusters reach peak performance also have better claims outcomes.
