Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features NCCI’s release of a new five-part series examining the issues surrounding the growing impact of legalizing marijuana on workers’ compensation stakeholders called The Marijuana Conversation. (It’s a little different than the one your parents had with you as a teenager.)
The first article in the series delves into the issues surrounding the drug’s impact on workers compensation insurers. Key issues covered include how the federal Schedule I drug status of marijuana impacts workers comp, whether states require workers compensation insurers to reimburse/pay for medical marijuana, and a look at whether medical marijuana is a viable alternative to opioids for pain management, better claim outcomes, and getting employees back to work sooner. Future articles in the series will explore questions that employers, employees, regulators, and legislators may have concerning the impact of medical marijuana.
