Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the North Carolina Industrial Commission’s recent announcement that it is creating a Workers’ Compensation Opioid Task Force that will study and recommend solutions for the problems arising from the intersection of the opioid epidemic and related issues in workers’ comp claims.
Industrial Commission Chairman Charlton L. Allen noted that opioid misuse and addiction are a major public health crisis in the state, and that many injured workers are prescribed opioids, “creating a nexus” between the problems affecting the general population and the workers’ comp system. Last year the Industrial Commission presented a report on the potential implementation of a drug formulary for workers’ comp claims filed by State employees, part of which focused on issues of opioid misuse and addiction originating from or exacerbated by workplace injuries. The task force will be composed of representatives of various stakeholders in the workers’ compensation system.
