Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the Ohio BWC’s recent announcement that its Special Investigations Division identified $56.6 million in savings for the State Insurance Fund over the past year due to workers’ comp fraud committed by claimants, employers and medical providers.
The Division also released its Fiscal Year 2016 Annual Report, which includes an overview of statistics and strategies for preventing and detecting fraud. Among the more than 1,500 cases that the SID closed during FY 2016, 668 were closed founded, meaning the original allegation was proven. The average savings identified among the 668 cases was more than $84,000. The SID also noted that its use of techniques like electronic surveillance and data analysis, including predictive modeling, led to its Intelligence Unit’s detection of allegations that generated $36 million of the total savings.
