WorkCompRecap: Avoid the Vortex!

September 30, 2016 - WorkCompWire

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features a Guest Post from Lydia Hendrix, COO of NeuLife Rehabilitation that discusses the challenges that face catastrophically injured individuals as they work through their way through the various aspects of healthcare systems toward rehabilitation and recovery.

Hendrix notes that these types of patients are often discharged too soon and/or to the wrong setting, unarmed with the knowledge and insight required to navigate their permanently changed lifelong journey. Traumatic Brain Injury patients, as an example, may not receive enough “big picture” brain injury rehabilitation, which can lead to numerous other issues, and into a cycle dubbed “the vortex of failure”. Hendrix also discusses ways to challenge current models to help avoid the vortex, especially when it comes to giving greater consideration to what the next “step down” on the care continuum will be.
