Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features CWCI’s release of the results of a new study that found that as California’s workers’ comp system began transitioning to a Resource Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS) fee schedule for physician and non-physician medical services, there was a major shift in where the medical dollars began flowing.
The report notes that as intended by the changes, primary care providers received larger shares of covered fees vs specialists, who received less. Reductions in the volume of services were seen across the board in 2014 and 2015, but despite the volume reductions, the average amounts paid to providers increased in the four categories that account for the bulk of the medical care for injured workers, including medicine services, surgery services, evaluation and management, and physical medicine.
