Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the California WCIRB’s recent release of the 2015 updated of its Workers’ Compensation Aggregate Medical Payment Trends Report, which compares medical payment transaction data from calendar year 2015 to calendar year 2013.
Key findings from this edition included that Medical payments per claim saw a 9% drop from $4,014 in Calendar Year 2013 to $3,635 in CY2015. The decline was driven by a drop in medical utilization, as reflected in an 11% reduction in paid transactions per claim, which offset an increase in paid amounts per transaction. During the study period physician fee schedule, pharmacy and outpatient facility services also experienced declines in paid amounts per claim, while Medical Legal services saw an increase. The WCIRB noted that the results reflect a continuation of the savings generated by the medical reforms enacted by SB 863.
