Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of the results of a new CWCI analysis of California workers’ comp independent medical review (IMR) decisions issued in the first quarter of 2016.
The analysis covered 40,742 IMR decision letters issued in Q1, and found that the system is yielding consistent results in terms of the number of IMR determinations, the percentage of modified or denied treatment requests that are upheld, types of medical services reviewed, and that a small portion of physicians continue to account for a disproportionate share of disputed medical service requests. Prescription drugs continue to be the most popular category (nearly 50%), and opioids and compounds together made up 40% of Q1 prescription IMRs.
