Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s recent signature of legislation aimed at combatting the heroin and opioid crisis in New York State. The new laws include several best practices and recommendations identified by the Governor’s Heroin and Opioid Task Force.
Key tenets of the legislation include measures to increase access to life-saving overdose reversal medication, regulations to limit opioid prescriptions from 30 to 7 days, and ongoing prevention education for all physicians and prescribers, with a mandated completion of three hours of education every three years on addiction, pain management, and palliative care. The new laws also require pharmacists to provide educational materials to consumers about the risk of addiction, to help improve consumer awareness about the risks associated with opioid use.
