Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the AIA’s recent endorsement of a new report that lays out key elements of successful state prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), which it views as critical for stemming the tide of opioid abuse.
The report, conducted by Shatterproof, includes 12 best practices for states to use in drafting laws, including requiring doctors to check databases every time they write a prescription for opioids or sedatives. Other best practices included enabling delegation of PDMP queries, proactive analysis and distribution of PDMP data, requiring interstate sharing of data from PDMPs, linking PDMP data to pain and addiction treatment (or licensing entities in the case of prescribers), and establishing baseline measures for evaluating PDMP performance and impact.
