Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new edition of WCRI’s CompScope Medical Benchmarks that found growth in medical payments per workers’ comp claim in Louisiana slowed from 2011 to 2013, partially as a result of decreases in utilization of hospital and nonhospital care.
WCRI noted that medical payments per claim with more than seven days of lost time continued to be higher than most study states. The study also found that hospital outpatient payments per service grew 1.0% per year from 2011-2013, more in-line with the median state, compared to 12% per year from 2008-2011, faster than the median state. Treatment guidelines went into effect in Louisiana in July 2011, however WCRI did not investigate their effect on utilization in this study.
