Today’s issue of WorkCompRecapfeatures the release of the results of CompPharma’s 12th Annual Survey of Prescription Drug Management in Workers’ Compensation.
The report noted that payers who responded reported an increase of 6.4% in their drug spend for 2014, a significant finding given that last year’s survey had posted a 3.8% decrease over 2013, and the fact that it was the first increase since 2009. Primary cost drivers were identified as prescribing behavior, narcotics, and the growth in compound prescriptions. Long-term opioid therapy and associated issues like dependency and addiction remained payers’ top concern, while compounds and physician dispensing are also being watched carefully.
