Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new report from NCCI that is a continuation of their efforts to examine how effective fee schedules are at controlling workers’ comp costs.
NCCI’s latest study examined average wholesale price (AWP) based prescription drug fee schedules, and looked at differences in drug prices across states to determine the effects that drug fee schedules have on prices paid. Key findings included that AWP-based fee schedules do have an effect on prices paid, however states with similar fee schedules do not necessarily have similar prices paid. Additionally, NCCI noted that although average prices paid are higher in “high fee schedule” states vs. lower ones, the differences are smaller than the differences in the AWP multipliers, partly explained by PBMs negotiating prices on a countrywide basis.
