CT Training School Employee Charged with Workers’ Compensation Fraud

October 6, 2015 - WorkCompWire

Rocky Hill, CT – An employee at the Southbury Training School was arrested and charged with illegally collecting Workers’ Compensation benefits while she was earning thousands of dollars working as a bail bond agent.

Carol A. Griffin, age 45, of 29 Myrna Avenue, Waterbury, was arrested on a warrant charging her with one count of Workers’ Compensation Fraud, a class B felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

She surrendered on Friday to Inspectors from the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney and was released on a written promise to appear in Waterbury Superior Court, G.A. No. 4, on October 14, 2015.

The charge is merely an accusation and Griffin is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Griffin reported suffering a work-related injury in July 2014 while employed at the Southbury Training School. She subsequently received nearly $68,000 in Workers Compensation benefits through August 2015, the warrant states.

The warrant alleges that Griffin worked as a surety bail bond agent for a Meriden bail bonds business and wrote bonds at Waterbury Superior Court that allowed her to earn more than $126,000 while she was collecting Workers’ Compensation and denying that she had other employment. Individuals receiving Workers’ Compensation cannot have earnings in addition to their benefit payments.

The case is being prosecuted by the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney.
