Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new whitepaper from Lockton’s Keith Rosenblum on the importance of using evidence-based medicine for accurate diagnoses and proper treatment in workers’ compensation cases.
The whitepaper uses the example of low back injuries (noting they’re the most costly musculoskeletal condition and account for 20-25% of all loss dollars) and discusses how the increased use of imaging in these cases is creating “red herring” diagnoses or overdiagnosis, both of which can lead to huge increases in costs via surgery or opioids, with little improvement in outcomes. The medical value of diagnosis using evidence-based medicine is covered, as is the value to the claims process of early intervention not only for cost reduction, but also avoiding the creation of many cases of unnecessary disability.
