Washington, DC – During a special Plenary meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) on Feb. 8, members elected Missouri Insurance Director John M. Huff to fill the vacant position of the office of President-Elect. The office was vacated on Jan. 20 when former Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael F. Consedine left the office.
Huff, a native of Potosi, Mo. was appointed as Director of the Missouri Department of Insurance, Financial Institutions and Professional Registration by Gov. Jay Nixon on Feb. 6, 2009. He was confirmed by the Missouri Senate on Feb. 19.
An attorney, Director Huff leads the department that protects consumers through the regulation of professionals and businesses that impact Missourians’ lives daily. The department regulates more than half a million insurance companies, banks, doctors, nurses and others.
One of his top priorities is using technology to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of license applications, renewals, complaints, enforcement actions and board and commission nominations.
In September 2010, Director Huff was appointed to the U.S. Financial Stability Oversight Council by the NAIC. He served two terms on the council and was the initial state insurance regulator appointed. The council was created by the 2010 Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.
Director Huff is active in the NAIC. He chairs the Reinsurance (E) Task Force, the Financial Regulation Standards and Accreditation (F) Committee and the newly formed Governance Review (EX) Task Force. He also serves as vice chair of the NAIC/Industry Liaison Committee.
Before entering public service, he spent 11 years as an executive with leading insurers and reinsurers, including Swiss Re and GE Insurance Solutions. At these companies, he led global teams and was stationed in two different European markets: London and Zurich.
Director Huff earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Southeast Missouri State University. He earned an MBA at Saint Louis University, and his Juris Doctor degree from the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.
Huff joins other 2015 NAIC officers including: President Monica J. Lindeen, Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance, Vice President Sharon P. Clark, Kentucky Insurance Commissioner and Secretary-Treasurer Ted Nickel, Wisconsin Insurance Commissioner.
