Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of The Liberty Mutual Research Institute for Safety’s 2014 Workplace Safety Index, which ranks the 10 leading causes of workplace injuries and their associated direct workers’ comp costs. Using BLS and other data, researchers determined which injuries caused employees to miss six or more days of work, and then ranked those events by costs.
Topping the list was “Overexertion”, which includes injuries involving lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, carrying or throwing, and was responsible for over a quarter of the top 10 disabling injury causes. When combined with the top two “falls” categories, the trifecta generated over 50% of the leading causes of disabling workplace injuries. In total, the top 10 listed causes amounted to nearly $60 billion in total U.S. workers’ comp costs.
