During our time at NWCDC 2014, we had Workers’ Comp industry stakeholders participate in WorkCompWire’s “3 For NWCDC” series, focused on this year’s developments and on improving the system! Here’s what Greg Moore, President and CEO of Harbor Health Systems had to say:
1. Looking back on 2014, what do you believe was the most significant development for the Workers’ Comp industry?
When asked this question at the beginning of the year, my sense was that the increased adoption of Outcomes-Based Networks was going to lead to more of a focus on how companies can bring outcomes based thinking into day-to-day care decisions. Throughout this year, most of our conversations with carriers and our partners did in fact focus on questions like “now that I know who the best doctors are, how to I make sure the injured worker is getting to them.” There is clearly a growing concern over how to best “Maximize the Impact of Top Doctors”, which is the heart of going beyond the outcomes-based networks into outcomes-based care coordination.
2. If you could wave your magic wand, and instantly change one thing about 1) Workers’ Comp and 2) your business, what would you change?
If I could wave a magic wand, the one thing I would instantly change about Workers’s Comp is to make it more transparent. The injured workers seem to be pretty far down the list of things that people worry about – most of these conferences are spent identifying the latest approach to reviewing claims, managing utilization, and catching people in the act of abusing the system. All of this has built up layers of controls that have put much of our industry at an arms length from the core fact that we are all in the business of making sure injured workers get the care they need. Peeling back these layers and focusing on connecting an injured worker with a doctor or care provider who can help them get better would be a welcome change that seems unattainable without some sort of magical transparency.
For Harbor, the only thing I would change is to be further along the path we have been plotting for this industry. We are more than a decade into developing the resources and abilities necessary to maximize the impact of top doctors, and every time we reach a milestone we see more concepts and capabilities that we want to develop and implement for our clients. It’s great to be able to reflect on the impact we’ve had to date in helping move our industry into outcomes, quality based care decision making, and optimizing care coordination. But, no level of success will ever outpace our desire to do more.
3. What is one thing you’d like to promote?
I’d like to promote our partners – both clients and vendors. Solutions we introduced this year like Care Concierge and Harbor One MPN, and the concepts we look to introduce next year mean little if there are not business people who are seeking out better ways to manage claims, focus on quality doctors, and help improve care coordination. Our greatest assets are our partners who are bringing us into their programs and working with us to advance both what we do and how our capabilities can be integrated into a greater overall solution. We are fortunate that the list is growing to the point where it wouldn’t fit in a quick response, and the best thing we can say about ourselves is that the companies who partner with us are industry leaders that are making a real impact on the total costs of workers compensation and the quality of the experience of the injured worker. If you are a policy holder, a customer of a TPA, or an employee of a self insured company that is bringing our solutions to market than I believe you are working with a great company.
