Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new report from the CDC that found large variations by state in the more than 259 million prescriptions written for opioid painkillers in 2012. According to the report, most of the highest prescribing states were in the South, with Alabama writing almost 3 times as many scripts per person as the lowest state.
The report also includes a study of Florida’s success in reversing prescription drug overdose trends via statewide legislative and enforcement actions in 2010 and 2011, after which the prescription overdose death rate decreased 23% between 2010 and 2012.
