Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the California Department of Insurance’s recent announcement that it has made progress in increasing the number of criminals arrested for workers’ comp fraud in Southern California. The DOI noted that it has given out over $95 million in grants to District Attorneys since 2011, and that the department has made over 500 arrests for workers’ comp fraud in the last three years, in spite of the often difficult and lengthy investigations required. Also in the news today are some addtional findings from WCRI’s recent release of the second edition of its Interstate Variations in Use of Narcotics report. The report found that the amount of narcotics used by an average injured worker in Louisiana and New York was “striking”, with the amount of morphine equivalent narcotics per claim coming in at double the amount of the typical state.
