Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the release of a new report from the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) Center of Excellence at Brandeis University that recommends that insurers use prescription monitoring data to help combat issues associated with opioid abuse. The report comes from a meeting of numerous stakeholders who explored the value and feasibility of sharing prescription data collected by PDMPs with third party payers.
The report notes that meeting participants agreed that data sharing between PDMPs and third party payers would greatly enhance insurers’ capability to monitor prescribing of opioids and other commonly abused drugs, leading to better detection of inappropriate prescribing and dispensing. Workgroups also formulated data sharing policies and procedures for consideration by regulatory agencies.
