Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s recent announcement that a New York State Supreme Court Grand Jury has issued its report examining the vulnerability of the state’s workers’ compensation system to fraud and misuse. The report stemmed from investigations by the DA’s Money Laundering and Tax Crimes Unit into false information provided to NYSIF.
The Grand Jury made several recommendations focused on combating premium fraud, including increasing penalties so sentences are proportionate to the magnitude of the fraud, increasing transparency by overhauling application processes and audit procedures, improving data collection and collaboration with fraud prosecutors, and enhancing education for both employees and the general community.
