WorkCompRecap: Backing Banning!

March 21, 2014 - WorkCompWire

Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features more announcements on various parties’ objections to the FDA’s recent approval of Zohydro ER. First up is New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who recently called on the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to overturn the FDA’s approval. The AG has also issued an open letter to medical professionals highlighting the potential public safety risks posed by Zohydro and reminding them that the drug is subject to the restrictions outlined in the state’s I-STOP legislation. Also in the news today are a couple of congressmen who recently introduced the bipartisan Act to Ban Zohydro. The bill seeks to withdraw the drug’s approval and prohibit the FDA from approving such a drug in a formulation that is not abuse deterrent. The congressmen noted that the FDA’s approval of Zohydro ER, in spite of its own advisory panel’s 11-2 vote against approving the drug, indicated the need for Congress to take action.
