Madison, WI – In 2014, the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions (IAIABC) commemorates 100 years of advancing workers’ compensation. Countless leaders have come together through the IAIABC to meet this mission and respond to contemporary issues and understand future challenges. It is through this work that the IAIABC has been able to lead with vision, commitment, and action for the past century.
In 1914, leaders from seven jurisdictions met in Lansing, Michigan to discuss best practices in the regulation and administration of workers’ compensation systems. At that time, workers’ compensation was in its infancy in the U.S. and Canada, and these new system leaders were compelled to share information and learn from each other. It was at this first gathering that the National Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions was formed. Representatives from Ontario participated the following year, which resulted in renaming the organization to the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions.
The IAIABC began with 15 founding Jurisdictional Members from the U.S. and Canada, and today, 58 Jurisdictional Members and 148 Associate Members from around the world belong to the IAIABC. It is through the work of these dedicated member organizations that the IAIABC has grown into such a valuable entity for workers’ compensation leaders.
In 2014, the IAIABC looks forward to celebrating these influential members. “At its core, the IAIABC has always been a community of professionals with a drive to improve workers’ compensation. The IAIABC Centennial gives us an important opportunity to reflect on the achievements of so many talented individuals,” comments Jennifer Wolf Horejsh, IAIABC Executive Director.
The official IAIABC Centennial Kick-Off will take place on Wednesday, January 22, featuring a live presentation and screening of a video including interviews with IAIABC members.
