Today’s issue of WorkCompRecap features the AIA’s recent support of legislation aimed at controlling costs associated with physician dispensing in Pennsylvania’s workers’ compensation system. AIA noted that physician dispensing has ballooned recently, adding millions of dollars to the workers’ compensation bills of Pennsylvania employers, and that recent research proves physician dispensing leads to higher medical costs and extended disability.
HB 1846 would permit physician dispensing only for a five-day supply and caps reimbursement at 110% of Average Wholesale Price (AWP) – the same rate generally applied to pharmacy-dispensed drugs. AIA expects that the legislation should put a major dent in cost abuse, and put the state on “an acceptable glide path”.
